Greenhouse Gas Emissions Information for Decision Making
May 1
This meeting will disseminate recommendations from the recent National Academies report Greenhouse Gas Emissions Information for Decision Making: A Framework Going Forward (2022), and focus on understanding greenhouse gas emissions information needs at urban scales in the U.S. 

Health Disparities in At-Risk Communities in the Gulf Coast Region
May 2, 9, 16-17, 23
A series of webinars will provide attendees with opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement on health disparities, health equity, and the factors that have created inequitable conditions; social determinants of health; and how community engagement is being used to address these issues. 

Committee on Law and Justice Spring 2023 Semiannual Meeting
May 4
This meeting will feature two public events — a public seminar exploring innovative approaches to measuring community perceptions on the performance of agencies responsible for public safety, followed by the 2023 Mark Kleiman Innovation for Public Policy Memorial Lecture, delivered by Tasseli McKay, a postdoctoral fellow at Duke University. McKay’s research has made key contributions in estimating the economic value of the damage sustained by Black communities from racially inflected policing and punishment, making the case for reparations, and building a formative understanding of how mass incarceration-era policing and punishment may shape violence in families. 

Integrating the Human Sciences to Scale Societal Responses to Environmental Change
May 4 and 5 
In this workshop, experts will consider how to integrate, align, and converge the broad mix of social, behavioral, and cognitive sciences to produce new insights and inform efforts for enhanced human responses to environmental change. The workshop will highlight examples, knowledge, practice, tools, and methods that can enable a resilient and prepared civic body. 

Prioritizing Actions for Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness
May 4, 18
This symposium will convene stakeholders to discuss how to prioritize global health capabilities for epidemic and pandemic preparedness. Sessions will explore how epidemic prevention, detection, and response are currently prioritized, and which approaches for building risk communication and disease surveillance are effective. 

Toward a Touchless Airport Journey
May 10
Airports are seeking opportunities to create touchless experiences for passengers, which will reduce common touchpoints and their potential for disease transmission. This webinar will explore the industry landscape of emerging and existing technologies and nontechnological solutions.  

Addressing the Rising Mental Health Needs of an Aging Population
May 15 and 16
This workshop will explore the state of mental health for older adults in the U.S. Speakers will discuss strategies to address mental health needs, including ways to build comprehensive programs to support older adult mental health, new approaches, support for caregivers, and research needs. 

National Aviation System Planning Symposium
May 15-18
This symposium will convene experts to evaluate the latest developments in technology and policy and how they affect national aviation system planning. The symposium will provide a forum for industry experts to exchange ideas and information relative to improving aviation planning processes to address the critical issues in the coming decades, and to discuss future research needs. 

GeoAI and the Future of Mapping: Implications for 21st Century Digital Resilience  
May 22
This meeting will address the implications of the future of mapping for digital resilience with a specific focus on geoAI, the integration of location, spatial relations, and place to the broader paradigm of AI. 

Approaches to Sharing Blended Data in a 21st Century Data Infrastructure  
May 22, 23 and 25
At this workshop, participants will discuss how privacy and confidentiality can be maintained when sharing and analyzing blending data. Case study presentations will illustrate current and emerging frameworks providing technical and policy solutions.  

Reports Scheduled for Release in May
Release dates for the following consensus reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on a contact list.  

Closing the Opportunity Gap for Young Children
This report will synthesize information gathered on the relationship between opportunity and achievement gaps for young children from birth to age 8, and make recommendations on how to improve conditions and promote success for children at home, in communities, and in schools. 

Nonhuman Primate Model Systems: State of the Science and Future Needs
This report reviews the state of the science on nonhuman primates used in NIH-supported research, exploring future needs and opportunities for new approaches to complement or reduce reliance on nonhuman primates.  

The Role of Net Metering in the Evolving Electricity System
This report will explore the medium- and long-term impacts of net metering policies on the grid and customers, and make recommendations on how net metering guidelines should evolve to support a decarbonized, equitable, and resilience electricity system.

Last Call for Submissions 
Submissions will be accepted until May 5 for the 2023 Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications, given by the National Academies in partnership with Schmidt Futures. The awards honor top science communicators, journalists, and research scientists who have developed creative, original work to communicate issues and advances in science, engineering, and/or medicine for the general public.
